In 1682, Peter Krebiehl emigrated to the Palatinate settling on the Weierhof where the family is still represented. See the article for the history of the family in Europe and America carrying this form of the name.) When the first member of the family came to America is not clear. An Eva Grabiel was married to a Christian Wenger in Lancaster Co, PA, about 1728 [keep in mind that Lancaster Co. was officially carved out of Chester County in 1729, out of which Cumberland Co. was carved in 1750, then Bedford Co. in 1771, Huntingdon Co, 1787 and finally Blair Co. in 1846, so Lancaster Co. could have covered a large geographical area]. The first known male immigrant was a John Krebiehl who arrived about the mid-18th Century in Lancaster Co. His son, or grandson, John Grebel moved to Juniata Co, became the first Mennonite minister and bishop there and is the progenitor of a large number of descendants who have consistently spelled the name Graybill. Bishops Jacob (1816-92), William (1833-1902), and William W. (1880- ) are among his descendants. His family who stayed in Lancaster Co. have largely adopted the spelling Kraybill. That part which moved to Virginian uses the spelling Grabill. Families moving westward to Ohio, Indiana and Illinois betray their provenance by the form of spelling. The Krabill family in Stark Co, Ohio and Washington Co, Iowa, is of Amish background, coming direct from Europe, not from Pennsylvania. The family has no connection with Conrad Grebel, the founder of the Anabaptist-Mennonite movement in Zurich, Switzerland, Although the pronunciation is similar. Among the currently serving Mennonite ministers of the family are Bishop J. Paul Graybill of East Earl, PA, Bishop William W. Graybill of Richfield, PA, preachers J. Silas Graybill of Doylestown, PA, Russell Krabill of Goshen, Ind., and Martin K. Kraybill of Elizbethtown, PA.
