First Generation

1. James R.1 Clevenger (#164) was born in Ohio on November 1, 1815.(1) At times his birth place was listed as Henry County, IN. The county had not been formed at the time of his birth. His birthdate is calculated from his death date of November 16, 1852 and age at death of 37 years and 15 days. James died after November 16, 1852 in Delaware County, IN, at age 37.(2) His body was interred in the Painter's Cemetery after November 16, 1852 in Fall Creek Twp, Henry Co, IN.(3) His gravestone reads: "James Clevenger, died Nov 16, 1852, aged 37 ys & 15 ds."

He married Mary M. Acker on March 16, 1838 in Henry County, IN.(4) Only the license was issued, not reference to the marriage actually taking place appears in the Henry County, IN files. (Mary M. Acker is #165.)

Mary was born on December 10, 1817 in VA.(5) Jacobs has birth date as December 10, 1817, but this is refuted by other sources. Mary was the daughter of Anthony Acker and Elizabeth Sarah Ocker.

Mary died on January 15, 1871 in Delaware County, IN, at age 53.(6) Her body was interred in the Painter Cemetery after January 15, 1871 in Fall Creek Twp, Henry Co, IN.(7) She sold property to Henry Acker on June 3, 1854 in Monroe Township, Delaware County, IN.(8) The land totaled 80 acres.

Mary was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Monroe Township, Delaware County, IN.(9) Mary was listed as a household member living with Andrew Bowers on the 1870 Census in Monroe Township, Delaware County, IN.(10) Mary's will was probated on June 17, 1871 in Delaware County, IN. Phoebe received $658.17 from the estate of Mary Bowers. It was to cover the undivided 1/6 of eighty acres of land in Monroe Township, Delaware County, IN; Section 21, Range 10 East. A complete description of the land is not available in the court record and a cursury search of the record does not show a Mary Bowers as owning land in that section. Mary (Acker) Clevenger who married Andrew Bowers in 1866 and was living with him along with John and Phoebe Clevenger in the 1870 census owned 80 acres of land in the W1/2 of the Nw1/4 of Section 20 of Township 19N, Range 10 East. This land is across a county road from that owned by Andrew Bowers. There may have been a misprint in the court record.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Jefferson Township, Henry County, IN.(11) James's will was probated beginning January 17, 1853 in Delaware County, IN.(12) Henry Acker was appointed administrator for the estate of James Clevenger in the January Term of 1853. He reported each quarter, receiving in April of 1853 an administrator fee of $12.55. In January of 1854 he was directed to sell the real estate in an open sale. The sale was completed to Mary (Acker) Clevenger for a sum of $800, one third cash, one third in six months and one third in 12 months. On July 12, 1854 he completed his respsonsibilties as administrator by receiving $903.50 and paying out $635.51, The court received $267.99 which they distributed one third to the widow and the balance to the guardian of the minor heirs, (Mary Acker Clevenger).
