1. Charles¹ McElwee (#119) was born in Pennsylvania on July 4, 1810.⁽¹⁾ Charles died in 1882 in Miami County, IN, at age 71.⁽²⁾ His body was interred at the Skinner Cemetery in 1882 in Adams Township, Cass County, IN.⁽³⁾

He married Catherine Barsh before 1838 in Pennsylvania. (Catherine Barsh is #120.) Catherine was born on March 22, 1810 in Pennsylvania.⁽⁴⁾ Catherine died est November 1880 in Miami County, IN, at age 70.⁽⁵⁾ Her body was interred at the Skinner Cemetery est December 1880 in Adams Township, Cass County, IN.⁽⁶⁾

Charles was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Carlisle.⁽⁷⁾ The line entry is: 0000100000000-0000100010000 with no Free Colored or Slaves listed. This translates to: Males 20-29 = 1; Females 20-29 = 1 and Females 60-69 = 1 for a total of 3 persons, 1 of whom is employed in agriculture.

In the Census of 1850, Charles was listed as a head of household in Adams Township, Cass County, IN.⁽⁸⁾ In the Census of 1860, Charles was listed as a head of household in Adams Township, Cass County, IN.⁽⁹⁾ Charles was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Union Township, Miami County, IN.⁽¹⁰⁾ Charles was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Perrysburg, Miami County, IN.⁽¹¹⁾

Charles McElwee and Catherine Barsh had the following children:

+ 3 ii. Martha Jane McElwee was born on July 27, 1839.

+ 4 iii. Amelia Elizabeth McElwee was born on August 4, 1840.

5 iv. Margaret McElwee (#4433) was born est 1841. Margaret died before 1850 at age unknown. She was christened on October 10, 1842 in Carlisle.

+ 6 v. Mary Catherine McElwee was born on January 15, 1844.

+ 7 vi. John Luther McElwee was born on February 20, 1847.

8 vii. Lydia Ellen McElwee (#790) was born in Ohio on March 3, 1849.⁽¹²⁾ Lydia died in 1861 in Cass County, IN, at age 12.⁽¹³⁾

+ 9 viii. Sarah Rebecca McElwee was born on August 29, 1851.
